Default Why not drill wholes in the plastic for a bin cage?

I punched a punch of dime sized wholes on the lid of my bin cage for ventilation. I don't think this is enough so I don't keep my lid on since my hamster can't get out but I would like to stack two bins. For that I'd need ventilation on the sides for the bottom bin. I was thinking, why not just drill wholes through the plastic itself instead of using mesh/wire? Is there a reason people don't do this? Is it not safe? I'm thinking it's because the hamster can chew through plastic but when putting mesh they can still chew around the corner. Any suggestions?
