I don't think there is room for a box in there so I'd personally leave that for now. Give him some loo roll tubes to trash. Watch out on the size of the wheel and that it is still big enough as he grows. It looks OK for a young syrian at the moment. I'd order the cage and get it set up when you are able to have the money for it.
Keep the other cage as a clean out cage I'd say and work hard on the taming so he feels secure and ready for the move when he has a new set up.
Right ok. I'll leave the level in for now then. I'll have a look at the box anyway when he gets up. If it fits, then I'll keep it in. Maybe push it so it's flush into the corner? The loo paper I have at the moment is slightly scented. I'm going to assume I cannot use that?
As for taming, I put the cage on the floor between my legs and open the door, letting him run round on the carpet between my legs and my hands. He's got used to me stroking him a little and his temperament is definitely very relaxed at the moment. Haven't been bitten or hissed at or anything.

Hamsters are ground dwellers. So having levels does them no added bonus. Sure it looks pretty, but to a hamster it's not much function. It's best to have everything on the same level, so food, wheel, house etc. Moreover it's best if you fill the base of the cage completely with substrate (the entire depth of the base). He's going to love burrowing into it. So that barely leaves room anyway for the extra level, and make the space below the level quite humid quickly on a warm day.
The only concern I have about having everything on the same level is the lack of space. Since it's still a relatively small cage, I'm concerned about not having a lot of ground space to move around in. At least with the second level I can put some food or treats up there, or keep the water bottle there at least? Sorry if I'm being difficult....
There's a lot of conflicting information I'm getting and I just wanna have a happy hamster (although he's already pretty happy and content!)
