I think the fact that he calms down after a while means he's fine. Random question, but do you take him out or let him out of his cage? Hamsters have a way of letting you know when they want to come out. Mine will come up to the door and sometimes run out himself, or will climb into my hand when he wants to be let out. But if he wants to stay in his cage, he'll avoid me, or even climb back inside if I take him out. If I'm cleaning his cage and can't let him back in, he'll get stressed and run around frantically. It could be that you're letting him out when he doesn't feel like it? I don't know for sure if that's the case, though. You kind of just have to get to know your hamster to figure that out.
