I would say that a lot will depend on the duration of the trip and how big the travel cage actually is. I tend to use travel cages for mine if we're only going away for one or two nights but if it's more than a few nights, I'll bring their normal cage.

In terms of the actual time you spend in the car, the smaller the cage, the safer it is for your hamster as your hamster is a lot less likely to get injured by either being thrown around or by objects falling on them in a smaller cage.
