Yes that bar spacing is too big. Max is 1cm (or half inch) for a Syrian. There are only two hamster cages big enough that I know of in the US. The Marchioro Goran that Cypher mentioned (usually available from Pet Mountain for just over £$100.) Or the Lixit Mickey 2XL from Amazon which costs more - $130 to $150. Of the two the Goran 82 is the best size for a Syrian. Alternatively a 40 gallon breeder tank or diy cage or bin cage are options.
