Default Re: Should I get a dwarf hamster?

Of course I'm biased but they do make the most adorable pets.
If you mean a Russian hybrid when you say dwarf then they are a lot faster than Syrians but not so much as robos or Chinese so they are still quite easy to handle.
They are generally very active little hams & will quite often be more active during the day than syrians.
Each ham is an individual so it's hard to generalise about how they are as pets but most enjoy interacting, some are really cuddly but not all, they are always fun to watch!
Being active they do need a good size cage, don't be fooled by their size into thinking a really small cage will be adequate for them.
Also it's not safe to use a ball with a dwarf ham so you will need either a playpen or a secure play area for out of cage time which most will really enjoy.
They do have different dietary requirements so it's best to get a dwarf specific hamster mix to feed them, Russian hybrids are also prone to diabetes so they need to be fed a sugar free diet, no sweet treats, yogurt drops, treats with honey, fruit is ok as a very rare treat but should mostly be avoided in favour of the less sweet veg.
They also have to have a sand bath in the cage, most people tend to use them for Syrians too but it's not as essential for them as it is for dwarf hams.
Hope that helps a bit.
