It's not unusual for one to get picked on when they have a bunch of babies in the tank & when that happens they take them out & put them in the adoption section so I expect that's what happened with your little guy, he's about the age they usually sell them too.
They wouldn't specify about species as in spite of his WW colouring he will be a hybrid, they all are in pet shops.
