Hamsters do like lots of bedding in the winter to make big cosy nest - to help keep them warm so you don't need to take any out. They also like to block of their house entrances as well to make it darker inside their house and also stops them being in a draught too. I always leave shredded up piece of tissue around my girls cage and she will take them to her house if needed.
