I would not go below 1100 sq inch for Syrian, with deep burrowing area, lots of enrichment. If you have space go even bigger. If you have Ikea near you or you're crafty you can go bigger.
Hamster is "happy" with cage when he is not trying to escape, when he is not barr chewing. SO If ther eis space-go for as big as you can. One happy syrian lives in 250 cm x 60 cm (not mine) thats 2232 sq inch.
