The bar spacing will be too big so it would need meshing, which is no mean feat! If you want to mesh it I would suggest meshing it on the inside, being careful there are no sharp edges. Cable ties can be used to fasten the mesh. A canadian member suggested the inside meshing to ensure that the hamster can't get through the bars and get trapped between the bars and the mesh.

An alternative, which may be a lot easier - would be to make a bin cage. Are you in the Uk, US or elsewhere? We can suggest suitable bins. You cut out holes in the panels and mesh them.

If you're in the Uk another option could be to get a second hand hamster heaven off ebay or gumtree.
