Hi Macy,
I see no reason why you shouldn't adopt as a new hamster owner, it may be a steep learning curve, it may not.
If you are going to get a Syrian Hamster be sure to get a good sized cage for your prospective Hammy, an Alaska cage is a good size they can be picked up from Zooplus at a very reasonable cost, they are also deep so you can put a good depth of substrate as Hammies quite often like to burrow/dig, the Alaska is also good for customisation.
Ghost our Hammy lives in an Alaska as did Pip our previous incumbent.
A must have is a good sized wheel at least 28cm for a Syrian Popular is the 28cm Trixie which is also widely available and is very good value too and easily cleaned.
Have plenty of hidey spaces for your Hammy, ramps/bendy bridges etc
I give Ghost fresh/thawed veggies daily as well as his normal hamster mix.
If you are Instagram Ghost has an account there ghost_the_hamster there are pics there of Ghosts cage set up etc.
I hope this helps.
Good luck with your Future Hammy
