Thank you everyone for your help, I took him in a cardboard box with some holes cut in the lid. I put some sawdust and bedding in there and he spent the whole time there making his bed. At first, when he met the vet he was a bit grumpy with her (she'd woken him up from a nap) but he seemed to be okay with the experience as once she put him back in the box he went back to sleep.
