Do you have any small (about 30cm square) plastic storage boxes? You can make some holes in the lid and fill with plenty bedding so he can dig down and feel safe.
The ball is too small and he will not feel safe in there and if he panics he might hurt himself. I'm sure you will be able to find a plastic box or even take him in his cage if you have a lift to the vets. I hope he gets on OK.
