Memories are strange sometimes. They can be buried deep in the subconscious mind, and it is difficult to ascertain what will trigger certain deeply painful, stored memories (especially those dealing with tragedy or abuse). Unfortunately, it is apparent that your beloved cat has been through quite a lot of trauma in her earlier life prior to living with you; maybe it is a smell, a sound, or a change that made her fear of and animosity for men resurface. Even though she might have come into contact with or experienced these potential triggers in the past, sometimes it may not trigger the memories then and they will resurface at a later encounter with these triggers. Sometimes it is the quantity of triggers and other times it is the magnitude of one specific event. Who knows exactly what caused this to occur, but all that is truly certain is that she needs all the extra loving care and support that you, your family, and friends can give to her. She is a cat with much unresolved pain inside, so it will probably take some time for her to feel completely comfortable around men (and maybe she never will again). Just love her unconditionally as you have always done and be vigilant that she doesn't have unsupervised meetings with men while she is in this state so she won't feel the need to go deeper in her shell or even possibly lash out due to fear.
