You could cut the wire lid so a tube would fit. A Syrian hamster would be able to climb a vertical tube ok, by a dwarf hamster may find it difficult.
Have a look at you tube. Hopping hammy had a big diy cage (as the main cage) connected to a habitrail cage(s). She has built an even bigger diy cage recently, but I doubt she will connect it with tubes to another cage.
