There really isn't any substitute for wire mesh.You could try zip ties but that would take a lot of patience and would be nowhere near as reliable as mesh
You don't want to attempt to use any household wire shelving or anything like that either,as the paint cannot ever be verified as safe so being within access(including as a lid)of a hamster is extremely dangerous.
