The cleaning sounds ok then, better to do a little at a time in future though, stuff does tend to collect on the base of the cage which is why I'm not to keen on the "just clean the top layer" method but you don't need to worry too much about cleaning that too often, you can still just do part of the cage at a time.
I'm sure the boys will come round & you'll find a routine that suits all of you.
