I would happily recommend the Alaska cage, but if you have some large fish tanks that would be ok you will have a heck of a good starting point..
As for substrate I use wood shavings for Pip I tried her with Fitch, but the dust from it made her sneeze a lot, so would not risk the chance of a respiratory problem occurring.

Thank you for your help, I think I'm going to go with the Alaska, especially as it's not as expensive as I was expecting it to be!
That's interesting to know about the Fitch, I was planning on ordering a sample size and I guess I'll have to see how I get on with it once I get my hamster..
