I have a cat and hamster too and like you I don't let them in the same room unattended and move the cat if he's taking too much interest in the hamster. Personally I think it is enriching for both pets to acknowledge each other as this brings out natural behaviours and experiences they'd get in the wild but at a much less stressful and dangerous level. I keep interaction between them at a minimum but I can't teach the cat to never be interested - it's his nature. I'll lift him off and distract him with a toy Instead.

I feel like my hamster winds the cat up by trying to get his tail through the clear plastic of the cage and staring back at the cat as if to say 'haha you can't get me ��
