You can move the two end shelves up and down - they can sit on any level that has bars. While they're a bit stiff to move up and down, they do just sit on the bars (no glue, screws etc.) so you can move them as often as you like.

There is also a shelf which bridges the gap between the two - totally optional whether or not you want to use it, but if you do then it does mean that realistically the two end shelves have to be at the same height.
