My family has had both males and females over the years. At this very moment, I have a male, but I love both. Each has its pros and cons. I'll give you a list of a few facts about each. Although, keep in mind that each hamster is in itself a different hammie. They each have their own personality. Who knows? You might get one that doesn't want to go with the "Status Quo". Usually has less health issues(infections, etc.)

Normally more vocal on needs or wants
Cons
Tend to be smelly when in heat(meh)
Pregnant? worries
May have more health problems(infections and reproductive issues)
