Thank you for the advice everyone!
We feel much better now for separating them compared to that morning when it started. I think even if they had calmed down and remained together we still wouldn't have felt safe knowing that they had squabbled seriously.
Also we didn't realise that they would lose each other's scent so quickly so I'm glad Cinamon Bear has mentioned it. It was under advice from where we got them that we tried to reintroduce at night!
They seemed better late last night and were grooming and playing with their toys, currently waiting for them to wake up to see how they both are
