Maybe I'm saying something stupid but, maybe it's only that their teeth hurt, like when humans have tooth ache, could it be possible? Maybe that's why he doesn't want to chew hard things, and not because his teeth are too long, but obviously if he doesn't use them so much I understand your concern of them being too long.
