Sometimes a hamster will never settle in a cage that meets the often quoted 'ideal cage sizes' and will need to live in something smaller and trust me, that's okay because what is more important is your hamsters happiness. If she feels more content in a smaller space then I'd leave her be and upgrade at a later date if need be. This is how I upgrade all of my Chinese and find that they'll soon let me know if they're not happy.

It can take some planning to fit things in a smaller cage but it is possible if you prioritise what your hamster will get the best use of.
