Default Re: Trixie wheel question

I would get the 29cm Karlie wheel (open). It's silent and is on at £11.99 at zooplus at the moment and they seem to be in stock at the moment. It's a great wheel. Just needs the running track checking carefully for any splinters - a piece of sanding paper handy is an idea just to give it a quick rub over. I did mine in 10 minutes. Also painting it with plastikote is a good idea in case it gets wee'd in. Also only takes about 10 minutes, then let it dry overnight and do a second coat.

If she chews that wheel as well, it means she's a chewer! Rather than a hamster who doesn't like wheels with holes in. But at least when wood is chewed you can smooth it down with the sandpaper again.

Although that link for the plastikote is for an add-on item, if you click other sellers, you can just buy it without it being an add-on, that's what I do. You just brush it on with a normal paintbrush - I used a 1" one.

The only other open wheels I can think of are the 12" comfort wheel (which is huge and can be noisy and reports of it breaking easily) or the Savic Rolly wheel - also noisy and not as long lasting.

Or - depending on the size of your hamster - a Carolina storm bucket wheel. They are also silent and height adjustable but only have a diameter of 10.5" which would be ok for a smaller or average syrian. I think they're available on Etsy but aren't cheap as imported from the US. Also available directly from the US I think.

I'd go for the Karlie wheel. It's a slight hassle having to do a little bit of sanding maybe and plastikoting, but it's a good sturdy wheel and silent and a good size for all syrians.
