When they appear greasy it's usually just that they've been scent marking (rubbing their scent glands against things), you shouldn't need to put your ham in a sand bath but just keep the sand bath in the cage so that he can groom & roll in the sand as & when he needs to or wants to.
Not sure about the squeaking, that's usually a sign of fear or pain so check he hasn't hurt himself somehow.
