Maybe a few smaller toys around the empty areas,and deeper substrate if possible with something to block it off from the other part of the cage?
You could also add some toilet paper/loo roll as long as it's plain and dissolved easily with water after getting your scent on it by wearing it inside clothing for a while
This could wait until the day you get your hamster though!
