I tend to buy the toothbrush ones as my hamsters find those the easiest to chew and drag around their cages but I don't think there's much of a difference. At the moment I've got the small ones as they were on offer in my local pet shop and they'll last my Chineseys a couple of weeks.
I tend to leave mine in their cages all the time so they can have a nibble whenever they feel like it. They tend to drag them off to one of their stashes or to some other special place where they can keep it safe.
