I think the most important thing is to plan it before you start. Grab a piece of paper and start drawing!
Afterwards grab a ruler and decide the measurements. It's way easier to figure out how big you want the house if you have a ruler. Say you want a house that is 10x15 cm, the ruler allows you to get a better picture of how big that actually is.

After you have drawn down your idea and figured out the measurements it's just to begin building! You can use vanilla's video as a guideline for how you make walls, doors, roofs and whatnot if you aren't sure yourself (:
