for overnight I think it will be fine. If you can get some heavy duty self adhesive velcro you can attach a small mouse bottle using that or a chunk of cucumber would suffice.
Maybe the rescue would allow you to borrow the cage he is in and you can return it if necessary when your cage arrives?
