I had one for Joey, he's a Robo and even he didn't really have any room to dig around in it! I found that sectioning a corner of his tank off with a bendy bridge works great, I can really pile the substrate deep in that area and then leave the rest fairly shallow so it doesn't interfere with his wheel etc.
