You always need a size up from what they are designed for. The small ones aren't any use for any hamster, medium ones are ok for dwarf hamsters and large (rat sized ones) are good for syrians. Any smaller and they will be running unnaturally. My dwarf tried out the rat one and ran so fast when she stopped went flying so I wouldn't recommend getting one too big either. Wheels are safer and if you get a good one can be very quiet. I find the flying saucers quite noisy
