I think he'd probably climb over that quite easily - easy enough to climb up mesh! You could make one out of cardboard or correx/coroplast. I got some sheets of A1 sized correx and some bulldog clips, after someone on here suggested it - it works well as a playpen, you just have to check there are no gaps when you clip the pieces together. And you can slide the sheets under the sofa when not in use

There's no way a hamster can get over the top. Or cardboard from large boxes would do the same thing. I put a couple of floor cushions in it - if they get pee'd on, they're easy enough to wash but Charlie doesn't seem to pee on them. Or just cardboard or correx on the floor.
