I wouldn't rule out using a habitrail twist or ovo my self. I think they are suitable for use with syrians, but only when used as an addition to a larger cage. They make great areas for your hamster to explore and create dens. I would recommend removing the wheels that come with the ovos due to the fact that they can injure themselves on the groove cut down the middle that is meant to allow food and waste to pass through. I would also recommend the OVO tubes because they are a bit larger and allow syrians to fit through them better.

And the fact that they are mostly acrylic shouldn't be an issue if you keep your hamster in a climate controlled home and keep up with cleaning it weekly.
