I had a Maxi Duna when I first had gerbils. It lasted for quite a while, until I got my 3 girls, Bella, Esme and Alice...who soon found a weak spot and got right through it - I found them hiding under my bed lol. I got a 3ft glass exo-terra terranium after that lol.
The Maxi is quite good though, providing you give your hamster plenty of toys and tunnels for it to play with.

I can't help you with shelves I'm afraid though.
