Is the fluffy hideout bed one of those fleece hamster nappers? If so I should take it out, because as others have said, if they ingest fleece or other material it can block their intestines and kill them. If he's destroyed it he might eat some of it. It sounds like maybe he wants somewhere snug and safe to hide in. If you have lots of shavings or whatever substrate you have, in the bottom and lots of torn up white toilet paper in there, he will make himself a nice safe little nest to hide in. He's probably hiding his head because he hasn't got anything to crawl into. When they make a nest, they make it big enough so they can crawl inside and be completely covered up. So if you haven't got any of that white paper bedding, then get white toilet paper and tear it into small pieces and put a few big handfuls in there and he will make himself a nice cosy nest. Also is there a house or hide in there? If not, you could put a cardboard box in with a hole cut in one side to make an entrance door - your hammy will probably dive straight in! He probably feels a) a bit exposed and not safe and b) thinks there is a dog about!
