NiChan, I found that using Vaseline helps. Just apply it around the edge of the hamster cage, making sure to apply along the edge all the way around. The ants can't walk across the Vaseline and won't get into the cage.
Vaseline is harmless to hamsters and it works wonders to keep ants out.
