We are located in Alabama, US.
My daughter always wanted some rodents that would be "handle-able" and when I saw an ad on craiglist for Winter White Hamsters I decided to go get some. I did a bit of research beforehand so I wouldn't be completely clueless. We also had a cage ready, although that cage quickly got replaced by a bigger one.
The breeder had lots and lots of different hamsters. All were well kept and clean and handled daily, which was amazing to me given how many she had. They were all in beautiful and clean cages. She had chinese dwarfs and Winter Whites available. After researching I decided to go with the Winter White. I only wanted one originally but they seemed to get along so well (the litter was in one cage) that I got 2 sisters. They are almost 2 month old. After reading some more I'm a little concerned that they will continue to get along, so fingers crosses...So far we had a couple of "dominance" displays from the darker colored one, but they were short lived and no damage done ! Most of the time these 2 cuddle together.
Both are beautiful and already tame. My daughter called the dark one "Lyuze" (spoken Lie-u-say) and the light one "Dawn".
Like I said, we already updated to a larger cage which is a "work in progress" waiting on more pieces to make it the final masterpiece. They seem to enjoy their cage and they don't seem stressed at all.
Strange thing is that with all the cozy sleeping areas and the deep cozy bedding everywhere, their favorite sleeping spit is crammed on top of one another in a tube. Not hidden, either. I can't see how that is comfortable, but they seem content and to enjoy it...weird.
