Default Re: *PLEASE look* Hamsters making noises? Is this normal? Active and well!

Spot cleaning is best right now yes. Depending on the size of the cage, a smaller cage will get soiled quicker so will need more spot cleans than a larger cage. Always try to keep his nest the way it is and only remove half of his nesting material unless it is soaked in wee of course!

Hamsters feel more settled if they have familiar scent around them which is why whole cage cleans, especially with young, new or nervous hamsters isn`t a good idea. We see it a pee and smell, they see it as comfort and territory, so removing the whole thing can upset them. I never do full cage cleans now unless I have a very old or diabetic hamster as they will urinate much more. Keeping the cage clean but not spotless is the way to go.

If you allow your hamster plenty of time and give him his own space, he will appreciate it. Hamsters who are played with too much or disturbed can become unsettled and nippy. Your little one sounds as though he`s happy playing away in his wheel and getting to know you when he`s awake.
