Why do you think the ages are so variable? I mean to die of old age at about 2 and equate it to about 80 human years, would make 1 human year about 40 hamster years. But then that would make the ones that live to age 4 one hundred and sixty hamster years old! I wouldn't be so insulting to say the ones that live past three and four have better care...we all know that even with the best care our hams can slip away unexpectedly. But I would be interested to know why there's such a huge variation at which death occurs naturally.
Oh, and not sure if I put Oakie, but in case not: Male Syrian, 2 years, 3 months, possible stroke.
