Re the compost - careful that what you give doesnt have plant food in (a lot do) as I cant imagine this would be good for the hamster to ingest. It may not do any harm but I wouldnt risk it.

I dont see the need to bake the compost either - compost is made so that it doesnt carry parisites or anything as these can damage plants, certainly seedlings. So unless you've had the bag for a long time or its been stored somewhere damp I wouldnt bother baking it. I have a bag of compost in my spare bedroom (I live in a flat but grow herbs) so it doesnt get damp or go near any animals, insects etc. Unless its baked on a very high temp it wont get rid of any nasties anyway.
